Towards a Post-Materialistic Exploration of Consciousness
Hi there, I warmly invite you to take part in this unique experiment in the neuroaesthetics of sound.
Your participation will contribute to a deeper understanding of how individual differences, music and collective experiences shape aesthetic and transcendental states, and how this knowledge might help us imagine a post-materialist science of consciousness.
Experiment Overview
Everything is vibration. Sound, the purest expression of vibration, is one of the most powerful gateways into altered states of consciousness (ASCs), states in which perception expands and the boundaries of the self begin to dissolve.
Intention, attention, and imagination are key elements in facilitating these states. Music acts as the vehicle that integrates these elements, allowing the mind, heart, and body to synchronise in what can be described as a state of coherence.
When coherence is achieved, measurable physiological benefits can occur, including:
Reduction of stress hormones (e.g., cortisol)
Improved emotional regulation
Enhanced respiratory efficiency (more effective gas exchange in the lungs)
Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, supporting relaxation and recovery
From a more esoteric viewpoint, coherence represents a state of harmony between mind, body, and heart. In such states, individuals may experience expanded awareness, creative insight and a sense of connection to a broader field of consciousness, what some traditions describe as the collective consciousness.
Regardless of one’s preferred perspective, ASCs present a powerful potential to cultivate psychological safety while expanding imagination, agency, and self-esteem.
Before the session, I will collect data on personality traits, aesthetic sensitivity, and mood.
During the two-hour session, I will use deep listening techniques to guide you into a state of openness and receptivity. You will then listen to music in darkness while your heart-rate variability (HRV) is monitored using a non-invasive sensor.
Afterward, we will have a brief discussion about your experience.
*Please note: the session may be recorded for research purposes.
