This is an informal discussion where I will walk you through how I read and evaluate scientific papers and judge the quality of evidence. I do this professionally but also for making personal decisions around health, medicines and parenting.

Methodologists: Metricians of many stripes, information theorists, applied statisticians and other quantitative epistemologists evaluate empirical information through a very particular lens — we don’t believe numbers are “facts”. Instead numbers are an output of a measurement & analysis process that itself needs to be deemed trustworthy. If the process cannot be trusted in certain situations, then the numbers cannot be either. This is one way to interrogate scientific papers that heavily depend on complicated measurements and imperfect research designs.
