The traditional governance and management systems regarding urban and rural space tend towards centralisation, creating barriers to the efficient and creative use of these spaces, with resulting inattentiveness to community desires.

This session seeks to shine a light on projects transforming space into civic infrastructures by implementing flexible, community-driven governance models that encourage citizen participation and fosters a sense of collective stewardship. These include Mars College (California, USA), Traditional Dream Factory (Alentejo, Portugal) and the Permissioning the City project (Daegu, South Korea).

Following two short provocations on spacio-civic playgrounds, we will split into small groups to explore the progressive unbounding of a select group of example spaces, in the pursuit of making them accessible and beneficial for broader commons-based civic activities.

The workshop will use a social permissions framework to map how real spaces can transition to more adaptive, community-centered governance.
