Co-hosted by Nan Ransohoff, who leads Frontier and Stripe Climate, and Parth Ahya, who has led programs on AMCs at Schmidt Futures and now Renaissance Philanthropy, this program will dive into how Advanced Market Commitments can be a powerful tool for spurring innovation to address societal problems where there is no commercial incentive in the short term.
AMCs are a promise to buy or subsidize something in the future, if someone can invent and produce it. They have been used for vaccines, and more recently as the basis of Frontier, an an AMC that will buy $925M+ of permanent carbon removal by 2030.
But AMCs are a generalizable tool that have the potential help solve a range of societal challenges, beyond just carbon removal and vaccines. The goal of this program is to explore other areas that could benefit from an AMC (and/or other demand-pull mechanisms more generally).
The format will (mostly) take the shape of an unconference. In the first session we’ll give an overview of what AMCs are as well as how to assess whether an AMC might be a good fit for a problem area. The rest of the day will be 30min - 1 hour sessions workshopping/exploring specific areas where an AMC might be accelerative. We have a few of these already lined up (PPEs, cement, etc.), but have reserved ample time to discuss new ideas from folks at Edge Esmerelda.
